The initiative unveiled in Kampala by the State minister for Tourism, Mr Godfrey Kiwanda adds curvy and sexy Ugandan women to the list of tourism products to attract tourists. The campaign has so far seen protests and backlashes from social media including a petition from one Ms Primrose Murungi demanding for Mr Kiwanda to offer a public apology for objectifying and reducing women to nothing, there has been quite many objections from twitter
How can Uganda purport to fight sex slavery when a Minister is objectifying women by designating them as “tourist attractions”? Karamagi Andrew
Sexism is deeply rooted in Ugandan cultures. This declaration of curvy women as tourist attraction is a call for the sexual exploitation of #Ugandan women and girls by perverted foreign men. This is an antithesis of the protection of women in #Uganda – Azzez Jawara
Then they say sex workers and mini skirts are indecent. So which is which here. Or are women allowed sexuality only when it’s imposed and objectifying? But let one woman express sexuality through self-agency and that is a problem. Kmft. Throw away the whole country. – Irene Najjemba
Oh my! Can we get any lower on this continent? – Farida
Ugandan women are some of the most beautiful in the world. I repeat UGANDAN WOMEN ARE SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD. (And you guys are something else too! 😍)
But #MissCurvyUg is a step too far. Now I’m reading “women” and “tourism products” in the same sentence. You think this is emancipation? You’re wrong.
Let’s celebrate innovation, creativity, mental health, happiness and friendship, not the size of a women’s kabina, nor the colour of her skin.
Beauty pageants suck. All of them. They’re a relic of the 1970s. You start with a simple beauty contest and this is the logical outcome.
