Christians in South Africa on Monday held a memorial prayer walk to remember Ugandan Pastor Paul Kamba who was attacked and shot dead just about this time last year in Edenvale, a town on the East Rand in Gauteng.
Kamba, who was the senior pastor of Destiny Midwives Christian Centre, was allegedly attacked by three armed assailants while he and his wife were in their office after a 10am service on 4th February 2018.
Speaking to local media, Church spokesperson Sindiswa Maseko recounted events leading to the incident, noting that the attack happened after their three-day fasting programme.
“Normally after the 10am service, the apostle goes to preach at our Florida branch, but today he didn’t go because there was a guest pastor (in Florida). So instead he, together with his wife, went to rest in his office,” Maseko said then.
Two men barged in and demanded money from the pastor, Sindiswa said.
“It was at this moment that Kamba allegedly lifted his arms and shouted ‘in Jesus’s name, fire!’ A lot of people heard him shout that, but thought he was praying for someone,” Sindiswa added.
Seconds later, two gunshots rang out, prompting scenes of panic. One of the bullets hit the floor, while Kamba was struck by the second in his abdomen.
The pastor’s wife then volunteered to show the assailants where the money was, but the two gunmen casually left the scene.
Pastor Paul Kamba died at Tembisa Hospital where he had been admitted for treatment. His remains where returned home, and burial took place in Bugweri, Iganga district.
