Sunday’s verzuz brought two all time celebrated gospel artists in an Instagram battle that was meant to bring positivity in light of the recent civil unrest following the police killing of unarmed black man George Floyd at the hand of Minneapolis police, the creators of Verzuz, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz felt the culture should use some inspiration.
This was between 18-time Grammy-award winner Kirk Franklin and gospel super producer Fred Hammond which was a celebration Sunday’s Edition to bring to gospel all time artists to meet up in one place at a home studio to ensure a seamless worship experience. Bishop TD Jakes opened up the celebration with a prayer for peace, comfort and justice at this time.
Franklin proved to be the night’s fan favorite. if for no other reason, he brought his keyboard and continued to play the songs through during the 90-seconds-only rule enforced by Instagram only moments before the stream began. Song for song he dominated the evening by playing familiar crossover hits from his 20-year catalogue like stomp, revolution and melodies from heaven that got the fans in rocking from the living room to the public.
As pain, anxiety and fear circulates amid this seemingly endless and depressing news cycle of covid 19, police brutality among other world problems, people need to be uplifted. It should be noted that the church being a beacon of hope and central institution in the Civil Rights Movement was where activists like Madam C.J. Walker, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. went to organize and be inspired to get reprieve from the troubles of the world.
