Deputy speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC held on the first Thursday of February each year.
According to CNN, the prayer breakfast is meant to bring bipartisan political leaders and their religious counterparts together to meet, pray and build relationships.
President Donald Trump delivered remarks, revealing that “America is a nation that believes in redemption.”
He discussed the importance of faith for political leaders dealing with problems that range from the opioid epidemic to the rogue regime of North Korea, CNN reported.
“Faith transforms lives, heals communities and lifts up the forgotten,” Trump told the crowd, according to CNN.
“Since the founding of our nation, many of our greatest strides – from gaining our independence to abolition of civil rights to extending the vote for women – have been led by people of faith,” Trump said.
Trump further made a call for a ban on late-term abortions, remarks similar to his State of the Union address on Tuesday.
“Every life is sacred and every soul is a precious gift from heaven.” The audience erupted in applause.
