The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba, has expressed his disapproval of the Church of England’s recent decision to bless same-sex civil marriages. He argues that this goes against the teachings of the Bible.
In a statement, Dr. Kaziimba claimed that the Church of England has strayed from the Word of God and is now promoting sin. He stated that God cannot bless what He considers to be sin and that the Church of Uganda will not accept this.
The Archbishop also referred to the Church of England as false teachers and suggested that they have departed from the Anglican faith. He cited the Bible as evidence that God’s design for human relationships is between one man and one woman in a holy matrimony that, if blessed, may produce children.
The General Synod of the Church of England voted in favor of a proposal promoting full equality for LGBTQ+ Christians. As a result, gay couples who are joined in a civil marriage by the British government can now receive prayers of blessing from the Church. The synod also agreed to apologize for the harm it has caused to the LGBTQ+ community and to review the ban on clergy entering into same-sex civil marriages and the celibacy rule for clergy in same-sex relationships.
Dr. Kaziimba stated that the only context for sexual relationships is between one man and one woman and that any other form of sexual relationship is considered a sin. He emphasized the importance of repentance and putting trust and faith in Jesus to escape the bondage of sin.
Regarding the Church of England’s stance on the traditional definition of marriage, Dr. Kaziimba claimed that they are making contradictory statements. He argues that the only difference between a wedding and a blessing is the terminology used and that the Church of England is, in practice, changing its doctrine of marriage.
The Archbishop announced that the Church of Uganda will have over 200 members attending the 4th Global Gafcon meeting in Kigali in April. He asked for prayers for wisdom in responding to the crisis at hand.
