Ugandans woke up to shocking images of a demolished Church of Uganda branch in Ndeeba which was merely reduced to debris during the night. The razing to ground of St Peter’s Church of Uganda Ndeeba under tight security in the middle of the night, invokes the words of Bible where Prophet Jeremiah narrates “has this house which is called by name… become a den of robbers in your eyes? …We were delivered only to go on doing these abominations?” (See Jeremiah 7:10-11)
Eleven people including 3 Senior Police officers have been arrested by Police in connection with a demolition of a church in Ndeeba, Kampala, in violation of the directive by government prohibiting evictions during the lockdown period.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, three Police officers were arrested for failing to provide security to Church properties which were destroyed.
They include the DPC Katwe, SP Epedu David, the OC Station Ndeeba Police Station, ASP Mugira Yeko Kato, and the Field Force Unit (FFU) Commander KMP/South Region, ASP Isabirye Kaloli.
They are being charged with neglect of duty, according to SP Patrick Onyango, the Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
The other suspects were involved in the demolition exercise of St. Peter’s Church of Uganda, Ndeeba on Monday.
Some local media reported on Monday that the church was demolished after a longstanding land wrangle between the church leadership and a businessman only identified as Dodovico.
Katwe Police Station was notified about the demolition and a team of Police officers was dispatched to the scene.
Police say they were not informed about the eviction and demolition as the practice is.
Those arrested are: Kawooya Mohammad, Bbosa Muniru, Kiberu Amza, Mutebi Abbasi, Bulega Ali, Matovu Simon ,Kalika Ali, Mujuzi Andrew, Ssekito Badru, Isirinya John and Maruti Bashir.
They are currently detained at Katwe Police Station to help with investigations.
SP Onyango said that the suspects are charged with malicious damage to properties.
Police impounded two motor vehicles that were recovered from the scene, including an excavator.
“We want to warn the general public who are planning to evict people during this period of COVID19 that they risk being arrested and charged in courts of law if they go ahead with their intentions,” Onyango said
